The Wait: Honest Opinion Book Review

I love to read! Simple as that I just love reading a good book and being able to talk about it later. I've been reading quite a lot of books lately. Most have been for my graduate courses, but some have been for leisure. Two books that are sitting here waiting to be opened are Underground Airlines by Ben H. Winters, and The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Last.

But today I am giving you a super mini-book review on The Wait: A Powerful Practice for Finding the Love of Your Life and the Life of Love by Devon Franklin and Meagan Good, which is a great read for people who are single, dating, and married.

The book isn't solely about waiting to have matrimonial affairs. It's more about learning how to find and love yourself. The book gives vivid details of how to be more emotionally and spiritually healthy so that God can fully use you accordingly. One of the biggest things about The Wait that was an eye opener for me was seeing that emotionally shopping was a big issue for me. Shopping and spending way too much money when I should be saving for a family/friends vacation or using money that could go to a close family in need.

The book really opens your eyes to other things in this world that could be disrupting your blessings because you are choosing the flesh over the spirit.

Romans 8:5-8" Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their mind set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

While reading The Wait, I could feel the humbleness and desire that Devon and Meagan have for wanting their readers to love themselves while being free from the strongholds of this world.

The Wait is definitely not about putting your life on hold and simply waiting. That would be a really silly and sad book if it was solely about waiting, waiting, waiting, but it's not if you read the whole book for understanding. In my opinion, The Wait is about not giving apart of yourself to this world while patiently waiting for the breakthrough you have coming your way.

Is Your Heart Filled With Negative Seeds?!

Why do I feel like I’m not good enough? Smart enough? Pretty enough? I just feel completely lost! Why can’t I be content during this season? Well, don’t let anyone fool you, but everyone at some point questions their purpose! The main reason for why you are questioning who you are and what your purpose is is because of the negativity you are planting in you heart (Matthew 15:13-Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be up rooted).
I listed FIVE ways that you could be planting negative seeds into your heart without fully realizing that you are!
1) Media: You have to be so careful about what you allow your eyes to see and ears to hear. I used to watch just about anything on TV from the Bad Girls Club to the Real Housewives franchise. I didn’t see anything wrong with grown women fighting and cussing each other out until my walk with Jesus Christ grew stronger. I no longer saw certain shows to be appealing nor worth my time. You may not realize it, but you mimic what you see. This can go from the way you behave in relationships to the way you dress. You may find yourself dressing more provocative to receive attention from the opposite sex because you saw on a TV show that that’s how the girl got the guy. You may even change the way you speak because you saw the girl on TV gain more friends by dropping the F bomb after every other word she spoke. (Open your bible and read Numbers 13 for biblical example).
2) False Teachers: This one gives me the chills because it’s so easy to get caught up in someone who appears to have it all together. I have seen many spiritual leaders who really contradict what they preach. They promote living for Christ, but the way they behave away from the pulpit doesn’t depict Christ-like ways. The number one thing I’ve noticed is their love of money. They may preach that if you live for the Lord and do A, B, C and D, you will become very rich. Yes, it is true that the Lord takes care of His people, but your focus can not be on worshiping Christ to get rich or to gain “things”. I am NOT saying you are planting negative seeds in your heart if you enjoy listening to or watching spiritual leaders who like to dress nice or have nice things, but you have to be careful and look at the complete picture of what they are promoting.
*To understand how to identify a false teacher, I advise you to read Galatians 5:7-12 where Paul gives six ways to identify wolves in sheep clothing.
3) Environment: The environment that you are always in has a great impact on how you feel about yourself. Maybe you think it’s the school you go to that causes you to feel discontentment. I know the feeling of having classmates that just seem to really get on your nerves. You can’t really explain what it is about them, but whenever they talk or do anything you are ready to walk out and leave. What are you planting in your heart to allow yourself to get so worked up? Maybe, it’s not them and it’s really you. Maybe, you are in an environment that you really shouldn’t be in? Well just remember that this a TEST that you are experiencing. I like to look at difficult or stressful situations as a TEST! You either pass or fail. I hate the feeling of getting upset in situations because I know that I am not honoring God. When I remind myself that I am not representing my position as being God’s daughter, I can calm myself back down and realize that I can pass the TEST. I’m not usually the person that gets worked up and mad, but when I do I try my best to look around at my environment to see what is influencing me.
4) So-called Friends: I used to be a puppet! When I say puppet, I mean that I used to be that friend where you can make them do and say anything. I really wanted to please everyone and make everyone like me, so I would act just like my friends. I can remember one year in college. Some of the girls I hung around behaved over the top and seemed to always get the most attention from guys because of their behavior. Some even had stank faces imprinted on their face. You know, when a girl walks around like she smells boo boo in the air! That’s stank face. Well I was more on the shy reserved side, so even though I knew that their behavior wasn’t close to being Christ-like, I would mimic their ways. If a girl looked at me wrong I was ready to tell my girls, so that we could question the girl. If I liked a boy and he failed to let me know he had a girlfriend, I would consult my girls so that they could tell me the best way to seek revenge on him. I can remember talking to my mother one evening and I was letting her know certain things that had happened one weekend at college. I told her how me and some girls almost got into an argument at a party and how I had to win this game this guy was trying to play with me. After I finished my conversation with my mother, she let me know that she didn’t like who I was turning into. Whoever I was around had planted seeds of worldliness into my heart and now I was behaving like a girl who was beginning to lose her way. In the bible, Christians are instructed to stay away from worldliness and urged to pursue godliness. The apostle James stated in his book, “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God” (James. 4:4). I know this sounds silly, but I didn’t know that I was disobeying God by befriending people who had this big of an impact on me. I didn’t realize how much I was hurting people and causing a path of destruction for myself. I thought it was okay to hang around anyone and everyone. But I did know that something was wrong when I felt so convicted and shameful about my actions. I felt fake. I felt like I had been adopted into a secret society where you could behave any type of way without any type of repercussions. The only problem was that there were repercussions. The main thing I am trying to get you to understand is that if you don’t choose your friends wisely and have God in mind, you will allow seeds of discontentment and shame to be planted into your heart. I can honestly say I felt discontentment and shame for TWO AND A HALF YEARS because I continued to feed those seeds that were planted in my heart. But remember your friends can’t be perfect and neither can you. Remember, perfect friends are fake friends. There’s no such thing as perfect people, but if things appear to be off about someone listen to those senses.
5) Yourself: Stand in the mirror and look at yourself! Really stare at your reflection and ask yourself what can you do differently to bring yourself closer to Christ completely. Maybe, you need to distanced yourself from stuff on TV, social media, so-called friends, or maybe even your environment.

*Thanks for reading this message and please comment below to add more ways we can all protect our hearts and gain a better relationship with Christ! Stay Sweet. Be Blessed.

Study Abroad Experience: USC Upstate to Germany

Willkommen to Germany!

FINALLY! After months and months of being anxious to depart for Germany, the time finally came. Our flight wasn’t scheduled to leave the GSP airport until 11:07 am, but we decided to meet at 9:45am. Since this was my first time traveling without my family and flying on an airplane (ever) I decided to say goodbye to some of my relatives before I left for the airport. I was on interstate I85 by 9:00AM and as soon as I got near Woodruff rode the traffic stopped completely. I was already really anxious, so to be stuck in traffic for almost an hour was tickling my nerves. I arrived at GSP a little before 10:00AM. At this moment, I still had no idea what to expect when I got on the plane. I envisioned a really big plane with very comfortable seats. To my surprise, we boarded a really small plane. I felt a little claustrophobic once I got in my seat, but I just whispered a prayer and I was fine. Once the engine was fully running and the plane begin to accelerate into the air, I felt really excited. I felt like a child experiencing the ocean for the very first time. Since we weren’t given the option to sit near each other on the plane, Dr. Goodman (the professor who briefly stayed with us) was seated up front, Hillary (education major) was near the back, and I was in the middle. It was very apparent that the people seated around me had flown before because they were either napping or reading a book. I was the only one staring out the window amazed at how Greenville/ Spartanburg looked from above. Since the flight from Greenville to Newark, N.J was only an hour and a half, I decided to write in my journal until we landed. When we arrived in Newark, the weather was cold. We all brought layers because we knew what to expect. The number one thing that got my attention while we were walking through the Newark Airport were the serious faces. We tend to smile a lot because we are overall happy people, so I guess that explains the puzzled faces we received. During our four hour layover, we ate, walked around, and before we knew it we were departing for Germany! By the time we got on the plane we were really exhausted, but I still had an adrenaline rush. For this flight we were separated again, but I was seated next to a very sweet couple who were traveling with a missionary group to Germany. Since this flight was eight and a half hours long, I read a few chapters in my novel, watched two movies, and then I slept. I actually slept very well, and shortly after I woke up the flight attendants were serving breakfast. After we landed and went through security, we met up with Laura, a student from the University in Stendal, Germany.

During my study abroad experience in Germany, I had the privilege to tour Berlin two times. The first time I toured Berlin was the first day we arrived in Germany. Laura, the University student from Stendal, took us to the Berlin Train station to put our luggage in a locker and to get some breakfast. Even though this was our first day in Berlin, we were so exhausted. It had been around twenty hours since we actually slept in a bed. The one to two hours of sleep we got on the plane to Germany was just enough for us to have energy to keep our eyes open. I vaguely remember touring Berlin the first time.

We paid for a bus tour of the city, but was also allowed to get off the bus to walk around and look at the buildings. I recorded most of the tour on my IPhone while we were on the bus, but it was a little difficult because I kept dozing off.

Kaiser William Memorial Church

One of the most fascinating sites we toured was the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church which was built in 1895. The church was so beautiful and antiquated. There was a beautiful candle lighting inside of the church where you could burn a candle for a loved one. In order to light a candle, you had to donate to the church. The ceiling of the church was covered in glittering art nouveau-style ceiling mosaic depicting members of the House of Hohenzollern going on pilgrimage towards the cross. There was also photos of the church before and after the war.

International Night at the University of Stendal
(The local newspaper came and interviewed students studying abroad.)

For seven days we were welcomed at the Europaschule GS “Am Stadtse” which translates to European School at the Stadtse. The primary school covered grades one through four. On our first day we were welcomed by the Principal, Frau Anke Franzen, and the Assistant Principal, Frau Andrea Thiemann. The day we arrived there were two teachers with birthdays, so there was a lot of food and coffee during the breaks. We were given a guided tour of the school and then from 9:35 until 1:15pm we were in classes. We were given a schedule for which classes we would attend each day at the school. During our stay we attended English, Social Science, Art, Math, P.E., and Music during our time at the school.

There were many times when we were given the privilege to teach and assist the students in the class. The majority of the students were still learning how to speak English, but we had very little problems with communicating with the students.

We visited this small, government run school in a rural village called, Schinne. There were only 6 teachers in the entire school that just taught 1st through 4th grade. The total number of students averaged around 80. A horse pasture, small homes, and open fields surrounded the Grundshule Schinne. It was a great experience to see how the rural schools in Germany functioned. The teachers were very close knit among themselves and the principal. With a faculty that small, it was cool to see how close their relationships were with each other. The students were excited to see some new faces when we arrived!
We visited the Grundschule Schinne (Primary School in Schinne) for one day. Since we couldn’t walk to this school, the principal drove us to the school. It was about thirty minutes on the outskirts of town.

The last school we visited was the Bilinguale Grundschule “Altmark” (The Bilingual Primary school of Altmark). We had the opportunity to visit this school two times, and were placed in English speaking classes that taught a variety of subjects. The first grade students are taught mostly in German, except for an hour or two of English class once or twice a week. After the 1st grade, students are placed in subject areas where all of the teaching is in English. The Bilingual School focuses on learning to listen to the English Language and speak it clearly. The atmosphere was very relaxed at the Bilingual school. It was impressive that the students came to school and spoke English while most of them spoke only German at home with their families.

The second time we toured Berlin, we were full of energy! We woke up early on a Saturday morning and took a train with Rika, a University student from Stendal, and two foreign exchange students from Jordan. Even though it took a long time to arrive in Berlin, we had a great time on the train ride to Berlin. When we arrived in Berlin, we met up with about forty to fifty other students studying abroad. The students were from Jordan, Cuba, Israel, and the United States. Hillary and I were the only two American students. The city of Berlin was very crowded. Instead of being on a bus tour through Berlin, we had a walking tour with a tour guide who was very interested in the American culture. Each building we walked by the tour guide would tell us information and then give us time to take pictures.
The tour guide took a group picture of all forty to fifty of us in front of the Reichstag building, but we were never given a copy.

After the tour, we were given the freedom to tour the city of Berlin on our own. We all agreed that our first stop was going to be somewhere to eat! We ended up eating at the Mall of Berlin, which was very big and three stories tall. The food court was located on the top floor and had a really great variety of cuisines including some good German places. We all ended up eating Thai food. We shopped, grabbed some ice cream, and then we went to a grocery store that was located down below the mall in the "basement" or maybe not the basement, but I do believe it was underground!:)

Atrium (Had the best mushroom dishes)

The Atrium was a great, small restaurant that we visited twice while in Stendal, Germany. Located in the downtown shopping/historical district of the town, the Atrium had a variety of dishes that could satisfy many different preferences. We went there for an International Night to met several of the university professors and administrative staff. It was a fun 3-hour dinner, complete with dessert! We went back to the Atrium with the two students from the Hochschule that had been showing us around since we arrived in Stendal.

Okay, well this isn't nearly all the photos I have from my college study abroad experience, but I have to end it there or else this will be the longest post ever to man-kind. If your a prospective college student, current college student, or you know someone who would be interested in studying abroad leave a comment or question below. I would love to hear about your study abroad experiences. I actually have many more interesting things to tell, but I'll leave that for another post!;)

Top 5 Reasons You Should Study Abroad in College

# 1: Get out of your comfort zone!

The first time I ever applied for a passport, rode on an airplane, rode on a train, tour bus, and traveled further than South Carolina to Chicago was my senior year of college. And catch this, I did it without a single family member or friend. Although I did travel with one professor and one other education student, I had only met them a few months prior to the trip. We didn't even sit near each other going and coming back from overseas. This was my first time ever being away from home without my family, and I wasn't even afraid. My family was so shocked that I managed to earn enough of money and courage to travel overseas. When I left for Germany, I had only a six week German language course and Pinterest to prepare myself for the new culture I was to soon be living in. If I can do it, you can do it. That's what I told myself!

# 2: Resume/ Interview

Studying abroad can be beneficial when graduation approaches and the job hunt begins. Employers are searching for people who will be a great asset to their company and who stands out from the rest of the bunch. Writing on your resume that you've studied abroad in another country will definitely make you stand out. You will have great, beneficial information to tell the interviewer about your experiences abroad. But, make sure they tie in with the company. For example, if you are applying to be hired as a teacher. You could talk about your interaction with the natives of the country you studied in. Express how much respect you have for people of different social and cultural backgrounds. Explain how your experiences will benefit your performance in the workplace.

# 3: Finances:

Okay! So how do I find the finances to study abroad? Well, most universities have a international studies department that works on helping and protecting their own students while they are out of the country. The University of South Carolina Upstate, along with all the other extensions, provide scholarships and an insurance card that you take with you overseas. The scholarship I was awarded had certain obtainable requirements like your major, GPA, and one to two recommendation letters. Another way to study abroad is to use part of your financial aid. Sometimes your financial aid can be increased based on your GPA and whether or not your considered independent or a dependent student. Either way, it's much easier to study and travel abroad while in college. The rate to travel is way cheaper for students than if you traveled with a traveling agency. USC Upstate has a sister college in Stendal, Germany named Hochschule Madgeburg-Stendal. If we needed immediate help like directions we could call them

# 4: Culturally Aware

Studying abroad helped me to have a new appreciation for the things I'm blessed with. Some of the schools we visited were so humble. Unlike the schools I've visited in the states, there were children who wore the same clothes, shoes, and backpacks everyday. I'm not saying children in America don't have these same issues, I just never seen so many in one location. Another thing, which was actually positive is that transportation isn't like it is here in South Carolina. I'm used to getting in my car and driving where I need to go. In Europe, we had to walk every where. Unless we were going to the next county or territory, we walked to the schools, grocery store, and any where else we needed to go.

#5: Opportunity is Now!

Who knows when the next time you will be able to experience life in another country. The assistance you need for support is right their at your university. If you were to embark upon any dangerous situations while overseas where you needed immediate funds, well the university may not admit it but they have the funds to help you. Studying abroad overseas in college helped me to find myself and to help me realize that I am a lot stronger than I think. When I left the states, I was nervous that I was going to end up being around people who weren't Christians and who didn't understand my ways. I ended up getting along great with the young lady I roomed with overseas. Hilary and I were both Christians, we enjoyed the walking (exercising), and since we couldn't find an open church in Stendal, Germany on Sundays we listened to sermons on YouTube. Our guides from USC's sister university were great as well. There wasn't a moment where I felt unsafe. If it's fear that's holding you back, then I suggest you read Deuteronomy 31:6-"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.

"God didn't make this world this big for us to not enjoy it. Your time is now"-T.J.

Fiore, Justfab, and Mall Haul: 1 Romper, 3 Different Outfits

Hey! I hope everyone is enjoying their week so far! I don't know how your weather has been, but my goodness it has been so hot and humid. I'm in need of make up that's great for oily skin. But anyway for today, I am showing you how to make three different outfits from one romper. All three looks are less than $100.

One of my favorite boutiques around Greenville, SC is Fiore Boutique at Haywood Mall. They always have the cutest outfits that fit me to the "T". The look above is for Girls Night Out. I paired the romper with block heels for comfort and a black sweater for cooler nights. The black tote goes great with this outfit because its so versatile.

This romper was less than $40. The shoes were purchased from JustFab for less than $40. Sweater was purchased at Forever 21 for less than $20. And the shades were purchased at Charlotte Russe.

This second look is perfect for date night! I paired the rose colored romper with snake skin heels from Justfab (less than $40)  and a black clutch/purse.

As you can see, this third look is definitely my favorite because it can be worn for so many occasions. I personally would wear, or should I say would've worn this outfit to my classes. Its not too revealing and its loosely fitted which is great for comfort in the classroom. I paired the romper with a blue jean jacket (less than $30), khaki booties (less than $40), black tote, Aerie Panama hat (less than $20) and rose gold jewelry from Charming Charlie.

Oily Acne-prone Sensitive Skin Care Regimen

Does your face oftentimes look like you've been stuffing your face with greasy chicken? Is your skin oftentimes sensitive after facial scrubs? Do some products cause you to breakout? If you answered yes to any of these questions then this post is for you.

I didn't realize how sensitive my skin was until I began breaking out at the age of 18. Since this was my freshmen year and I was dealing with so many new emotions, I didn't worry too much about my breakouts. Until...they covered my face like a nasty rash. I can remember purchasing so many products at the drugstore and department store, but they only made my skin more sensitive and the breakouts didn't stop. As the years flashed by, I found myself caking on make up. I hated the idea of having to put on so much make up to cover up my uncooperative skin. My money was going down the drain and I was feeling very self-conscious. I even had a church member invite me to a cosmetic/skin care party, but at the party I was totally ambushed. She had me remove all my make up in front of a room full of her friends. They each gave me their advice on how to better take care of my skin.

"Stop touching your face! Stop wearing make up. Drink more water. Stop this. Stop that". I was humiliated. I figured they meant well, but I was so embarrassed. And on top of that, they wouldn't give me any make up to put on besides some translucent powder to cover my oily skin. (Oh how the memories resurface.lol).

After that incident, I was on a mission to find a skin care regimen that would clear up my unruly skin. So, first thing first is Simple micellar cleansing water.

Makeup Remover
According to Simple Skincare website. Simple micellar cleansing water gently cleanses the skin while removing make-up dirt, and impurities while unclogging pores. It instantly boosts skin hydration by 90 percent. My skin feels clean after using this product to remove my make up, but I always like to clean my face two times when I wear make up.

Cleanser
This product is great for oily and dry skin. This is one of my favorite cleansers because it doesn't make your face feel stripped of its nutrients. It cleanses the skin without being too harsh. This product is very frothy, so you only need a pea amount on your face. *Received as a gift after making an Origins purchase.

Toner
This is the only toner I use. It's 100% natural and it leaves my face feeling so refreshed. Its far from harsh and gently cleanses my pores.

Serum
This is the first serum I've ever used. I think I got a little obsessed with the whole quarter-life crisis movement that Origins and a few other brands promote. This serum is supposed to restore the appearance of your youthful skin. I haven't been using it long enough to see a drastic change in my skin, but so far I do like it. I'll have to do a separate post on my opinion of this product later.

 Moisture
This is my absolute favorite moisture (besides Murad's). It has SPF 30 in it and it doesn't make make skin look extra shiny or irritated. The price for this product is continuously going up because it is a favorite of so many.

Eye Gel
I have really bad allergies, so my eyes are often time puffy and feel dry. This eye gel feels so refreshing. I use it at night and in the mornings. Its lightweight, so I put this on after I cleanse my face.

Let me know what your favorite skin care products are below.
Stay Sweet. Stay Blessed. Enjoy the rest of your week :)

Welcome to Faithfully Chic!

My name is Tatiana Jenkins and I was born on November 9th. I am originally from Greenville, SC, but when I was in my early teens my parents brought a beautiful home further west of Upstate. I spent most of my childhood visiting different places with my parents and my older brother. We loved to go fishing, to the beach, camping and cooking out in the mountains, and visiting my father’s family in Charleston, SC. Along with having fun with my family, I’ve always had a strong faith in Jesus Christ. My mother’s parents are pastors over a church that my grandfather built, which is where my relationship with Jesus Christ began. Whenever I am stressed about work/ graduate studies or anything in life that makes me feel off balance, I simply meditate different bible verses to help calm myself down.

I discovered one of my first loves when I was 3 years old and that is dancing. My mother put me in dance because I started gaining an excessive amount of weight as a child. When I was in the 5th grade, I auditioned to be a part of the Fine Arts Center of Greenville for dance. I was accepted and continued to dance with the Arts. Later, I performed with the Easley Greenwave Dance Team. The dance team was a mixture of jazz, hip-hop, ballet, and modern dance. People saw us as mini- Lakers Girls. Along with dancing, I’ve been playing the flute since the 6th grade and I’ve been an active tennis player since the 7th grade. In high school, I continued to play the flute, run track, play tennis, and participate in several activities provided by Easley High School. During my senior year, my main focus was dancing, so I only danced ballet en pointe and took honor classes to prepare myself for college.

I am a graduate of the University of South Carolina Upstate where I earned my Bachelor's degree in Middle Level Education with concentrations in English and Social Studies, and am currently pursuing my masters degree. It took me three years to finally realize that I wanted to be an educator. My mother has been an educator since she was in her early 20’s, so I do feel like she’s had a great impact on me wanting to be a teacher. At first, I didn’t really think I had what it takes to put my time and energy into teaching until I observed an English class during my junior year. I’ve always loved being in an English class and writing. I decided to choose Social Studies as my concentration because I’ve always enjoyed learning about the past so that I learn from the mistakes and successes of others

Even though teaching has my heart, there are so many other things that I can also see myself doing like being an editor, owning a boutique, and even working as a news anchor.I decided to start blogging simply because the Lord led me to do so. I've always loved writing, but never thought to blog for leisure. I had a lot of practice blogging during undergrad because it was a requirement for a few of my ELA courses and for studying abroad. Since, developing such a strong relationship with Christ, He has truly opened my eyes to so many different things that I didn't know were right in front of me. My blog posts are all going to be God-led as I incorporate my love for fashion, reading, hair/skin products, and everyday obstacles that young women deal with.
